GPO Heavylift is proud to have supported Shanghai Salvage Company in the removal and transportation of the forward section of the containership X-Press Pearl from Sri Lankan waters to Indonesia for decommissioning and recycling. The operation was carried out by the semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel GPO Amethyst, marking another milestone in our track record of executing complex and sensitive marine transport projects.
Cargo: Forward section of the X-Press Pearl wreck
Client: Shanghai Salvage Company (SSC)
Vessel: GPO Amethyst
Route: Colombo, Sri Lanka ➝ Indonesia
Project Period: December 2023 – March 2024
Transporting a partially wrecked vessel section of this scale required extensive coordination between salvage teams, engineering experts, and maritime authorities. Following a precise loading operation in Sri Lankan waters, the GPO Amethyst undertook the long voyage across the Indian Ocean to Indonesia.
The operation demanded careful planning, weight distribution management, and ongoing adjustments throughout the transit to ensure the safe and stable handling of the complex cargo. Despite various external challenges, GPO Heavylift’s crew and engineering team maintained focus and professionalism throughout, delivering the cargo securely to its destination.
This project represented a close collaboration between Shanghai Salvage Company, local authorities, and GPO Heavylift’s marine operations team, demonstrating the value of integrated planning and technical precision in challenging marine environments.
The X-Press Pearl transportation exemplifies GPO Heavylift’s capability to perform under demanding conditions while maintaining safety, efficiency, and compliance with international environmental and maritime standards.
We are proud to have contributed to this important cleanup and decommissioning effort—delivering a complex load as part of an extensive international salvage project.
